/opt/local/lib
is where MacPort/Homebrew puts their libraries. It's not the default place
where compilers look.

I've added these lines to my .profile file
export CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH=$CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH:/opt/local/include/
export LIBRARY_PATH=$LIBRARY_PATH:/opt/local/lib
